A Nolensville Elementary School third grader is the winner of a national writing contest. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) announced April 21 that Mackenzie Bates had won the 2016 National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Junior American Citizen Award.

Mackenzie’s short story My Day with Ben Franklin was chosen First Place in Short Story from among 25,000 entries from third graders nationwide, which is a first for a student from Tennessee. It’s an award Mackenzie says she did not expect to receive.

“I was so surprised I was the winner,” said Mackenzie. “I am honored to win this award. I am blown away. Thank you to Ms. Lauer for being my teacher.”
